JPL Oceanographer Dr. William Patzert is the 2010 recipient of the American Geophysical Union Athelstan Spilhaus Award. This honor recognizes AGU members who have devoted portions of their lives to expressing the excitement, significance and beauty of Earth and space science to the general public. Bill joined JPL in 1983, and has been the face and voice of JPL oceanography and climate variability to local, regional, national and international news outlets for much of that time. Bill provides information, analyses and commentary for print, web, radio, and television news stories on a regular basis. His research interests include improving climate forecasting and analyzing and interpreting sea level height data from NASA ocean satellite altimetry missions. A strong supporter of NASA's outreach and education efforts, Bill frequently speaks to schools, environmental and business groups about ocean and climate science, spreading his knowledge of ocean and climate science far and wide. Bill will receive the Athelstan Spilhaus Award at the Honors Ceremony of AGU's annual Fall meeting in San Francisco, Calif., in December 2010.
