 A study of the effect of warm core rings in the Gulf of Mexico on hurricanes using altimetry data earned high school senior Justin Kovac seventh place in the prestigious 2005 Intel Science Talent Search. For his project, Kovac worked with Dr. Gustavo Goni of NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, and a principal investigator for NASA's Jason ocean altimetry mission. Kovac's prize includes a $25,000 college scholarship. Although he hasn't decided on a university yet, Kovac plans to major in physics.
