The 2012 Fridtjof Nansen Medal is awarded to Pierre-Yves Le Traon for his excellent contributions to and leadership in establishing satellite altimetry as a quantitative observational technique for research on mesoscale ocean variability, ocean circulation and sea level.

Its a great pleasure to inform you that Michel Lefebvre became a Knight of the Legion of Honour (Chevalier), one of the highest distinctions in France, at a ceremony in Toulouse on May 11th.

Michel Lefebvre has had a varied career as a merchant sailor, Navy captain, and astronomer, before going the CNES to lead their Space Geodesy group.
