  • The top map is from fall in the Northern Hemisphere. Sea surface highs occur because of the expansion of the upper ocean water after it is heated throughout the summer.
  • The bottom map shows spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Sea surface height is very low because cold, continental winds extract ocean heat throughout the winter.
